COPPA Enforcement
Updated July 24, 2000

The FTC is out to enforce the Children's Online Protection Privacy Act (COPPA), which was designed to protect children's privacy, specifically the collection of personal information. Though COPPA became effective last April, the FTC believes many sites are not yet in compliance. Currently the FTC is sending out emails to warn businesses that if they do not comply with the act by September they will be in violation of the act and face monetary penalties.

In its first announced COPPA enforcement action, the FTC said it would pursue COPPA remedies against ToysMart, which is already embroiled in a major privacy controversy.
